Join Academy Award–winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao for her first appearance in Australia, following the global acclaim of Hamnet starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley — nominated for eight Academy Awards and winner of the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film and the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

In a one-night-only event at the State Theatre as part of Vivid Sydney’s Creative Trailblazers series, Zhao will reflect on her remarkable career in conversation with award-winning journalist Kumi Taguchi.

From growing up in Beijing to moving to Los Angeles as a teenager, Zhao has emerged as one of contemporary cinema’s most distinctive voices. Her films — including Songs My Brothers Taught Me, The Rider, and the Oscar-winning Nomadland starring Frances McDormand — are known for their intimate portraits of resilience, community, and the search for belonging.

Zhao will discuss her creative process, her collaborative approach to storytelling, and how she has maintained a singular voice while moving from independent filmmaking to global productions such as Marvel’s Eternals and Hamnet.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear Zhao reflect on her journey, her craft, and the evolving possibilities of cinema.
