Few words, seldom publications and a legion of loyal readers. The much-acclaimed Irish author of Small Things Like These, Claire Keegan is revered by critics and prize judges for the miraculous density of her short fiction.
Her first collection of stories, Antarctica, was a Los Angeles Times Book of the Year. Her second, Walk the Blue Fields, was Richard Ford’s book of the year. Claire Keegan became an international bestseller two years ago with her first novel, Small Things Like These, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2022. It won the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction, the Ambassador’s Prize for best Irish novel published in France, and the Kerry Prize for best Irish Novel of the year. Small Things Like These, is now nominated for the Dublin Literary Award which is presented annually for the best novel in the world written or translated into English.
“She’s so utterly in control,” said Douglas Stuart, the author of the Booker Prize-winning novel Shuggie Bain. “She can say so much, and be so loud, with very little.”
Immerse yourself in a conversation with the woman of few words, as Keegan talks with ABC’s Sarah Kanowski.
