Would you swim in the Yarra River – Birrarung? Together with scientists, designers, and city leaders, we will unpack why the idea has captured the public imagination and what it would take to make it a reality. We will consider why water quality, ecological restoration, civic pride and caring for Country shape the way we share the river. From global precedents to Melbourne’s unique river system, join us to explore what a swimmable river could represent for the future of the city.

Host Janet Bolitho, President of Yarra Riverkeeper Association, joins James Henderson, co-founder of Wattle, Charity Mosienyane, Lead Convenor Swimmable Birrarung, Dr Rebecca Olive, RMIT University senior researcher in public swimming, and Uncle Andrew Gardiner, Wurundjeri Elder and Birrarung Council chair, as they explore the opportunities, challenges and cultural significance of a swimmable Birrarung.
