Culinary and cultural icon Nigella Lawson and social psychologist Hugh Mackay explore the deeper meaning of food and its connection to pleasure, meaning, belonging and creativity.

In the context of emerging social trends: shrinking households, busyness, our increasing dependence on processed ‘fast’ food and the Western epidemic of anxiety, we ask Nigella for her take on the symbolic and therapeutic role of food—whether we’re cooking, serving or eating it
Food has always held a central place in our cultural life -around food we perform uniquely human rituals that help shape our identities and world-view. Food is often the richest of the symbols we use to compensate for the inadequacy of words, especially when we want to express love or concern, or to celebrate, comfort or console. Yet as the velocity of our lives increases, the role of food may be changing.

At this unique event, Nigella Lawson and Hugh Mackay will explore the relationship between food and our identity, morality, rituals and creativity. In the context of emerging social trends such as our shrinking households, our busyness, our increasing dependence on processed and ‘fast’ food, and the Western epidemic of anxiety, we ask Nigella for her take on the therapeutic and symbolic role of food – whether we’re cooking, serving or eating it.

Using food as the focal point, this evening conversation is a chance to delve more deeply into Nigella’s philosophy of life, supported by Hugh’s research insights, in celebration of Nigella’s new book At My Table, which will be available for purchase at the event.

Proudly presented in partnership with Penguin Random House.
