The Matilda Awards is an annual awards event that recognises excellence within Queensland’s theatre industry.

With 18 award categories recognising outstanding performance across the industry, the Matilda Awards, now in its 37th year, are a highlight in Queensland’s performing arts calendar.

The Matilda Awards Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation that honours and celebrates the achievements of Queensland’s theatre industry.

Founded by a small group of theatre reviewers in 1987, the Matilda Awards has grown in scope and reputation over its 35-year history, evolving into a highly regarded and recognised annual awards event, valued by our theatre artists and arts-workers.

The last five years has seen the Matilda Awards evolve into a robust organisation managed and run by an Executive Committee and supported by a Judging Committee of 17 members, selected for their expertise and experience within the performing arts industry.

The Judging Panel, managed by a lead judge, view theatre productions that meet published criteria over a calendar year – January to December.

At the conclusion of each year, the Panel assesses all productions reviewed and shortlists are identified in each of the eighteen categories, including The Gold Matilda, awarded to a person, team or organisation that has made a significant contribution to Queensland’s theatre industry through their work either onstage or to the community at large.

The managing principles of the organisation are defined by a constitution that ensures all operational and judging processes are clear and transparent.

The Matilda Awards receive financial support from Arts Queensland and Brisbane City Council, with significant assistance from Brisbane Powerhouse.
