W.I.T.C.H. (We Intend To Cause Havoc) were the biggest rock band in Zambia in the 1970s and spearheaded a new genre dubbed Zamrock, fusing influences that ranged from the Rolling Stones to Black Sabbath and James Brown and mixing them with traditional African rhythms and bush village songs.
They call them the Beatles of Zambia and frontman Emmanuel Chanda the Paul McCartney of his home turf. And when you’re this prolific and innovative across multiple globe-encompassing genres, you can kinda see why. Zamrockers WITCH formed in the 70s but are very officially enjoying a riotous renaissance.
Their new studio album Zango is propelling them into a whole new era of appreciation by way of intoxicating Afrobeat, spacey psych-pop and Sabbathian proto-metal. Brunswick Music Festival is happy to catch them mid-orbit.
